Tractor insurance cost in India: How it changes based on brand and on-road price
Table of Content
Buying a tractor is a big investment for Indian farmers. Along with fuel, maintenance, and servicing, tractor insurance is also an important cost that should not be ignored. Let's discuss the cost of the tractor insurance in India, the variations in the insurance premiums and how you will save your hard-earned money on it.
What Is Tractor Insurance?
Tractor insurance is protection for your tractor. If your tractor gets into an accident, is damaged by floodwaters, is stolen or causes damage to another property, the insurance company pays the bills. Third-Party Insurance policy is mandatory by law in India. But most farmers opt for a Comprehensive Insurance policy to protect their own tractors, too.
Factors That Affect Tractor Insurance Cost in India
Tractor insurance premiums aren't one-size-fits-all. There are a couple of things they depend on:
- Age of the Tractor: A new tractor costs more to insure than a tractor that is five years old.
- Location (RTO): Tractors registered in a region with high accident rates will have a slightly higher premium.
- No Claim Bonus: For farmers who do not make claims, discounts are available at the time of renewal of their policy.
- Reason for Use: Tractor insurance also depends on whether you use it for your own farm or rent it out for commercial construction works. The risk and the price increase with commercial use.
- Engine Capacity: The larger the engine, the higher the third-party cost for higher HP tractors. Increased engine size (cubic capacity) results in increased third-party premiums for higher HP tractors.
Tractor Insurance Cost Based on On-Road Price
A higher on-road price of the premium brand tractors, like John Deere or Mahindra, with more advanced technology and more HP, results in higher insurance rates for these tractors, as they're more costly to repair or replace.
However, if you opt for budget or low HP brands like Eicher or Sonalika, then the on-road price of the car is low, thus making the insurance cost low. For example:
- The annual insurance cost for a small tractor could be lower, at around ₹5 lakh.
- The mid-range tractors priced between ₹7 lakh and ₹10 lakh generally offer mid-range insurance premiums.
- Tractors coming in the premium price band of over ₹12 lakh may be more expensive to come up with insurance premiums, since it is more expensive to repair and purchase spare parts.

Documents Required for Tractor Insurance
There are a few essential documents required by the farmers when purchasing or renewing their tractor insurance. Having these documents on hand will make insurance faster.
- Address proof
- Passport-size photograph
- Aadhaar Card or identity proof
- Purchase invoice for the tractor
- RC (Registration Certificate) of the tractor
- Previous insurance policy copy (for renewal)
Tips to Reduce Tractor Insurance Cost
- If you did not make any insurance claims in the previous year, you get a discount on your renewal premium. This discount can be as much as 50% over 5 consecutive claim-free years!
- If your tractor is equipped with ARAI-approved anti-theft locks or GPS trackers, insurers consider it to be a low-risk vehicle and often give a discount.
- If you can afford to pay a small amount out of your own pocket when you make a claim, insurance companies will reduce your annual premium
